I’ll say 2 things up front: 1) I have not used her products before, but 2) I get pitched on occasion for a wide variety of guest posts and this one stood out from the start. There are some great and actionable tips below, so let me get out of the way and let Gehana take it from here!

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to dramatically change your lifestyle to see significant changes in your health. Every dramatic improvement in your health can be started with one small positive step. Or several small steps.

Big changes require small shifts. Each small step, when done consistently, can improve all areas of your health. Whether it’s improving your eating habits, becoming more active, or keeping a more positive outlook each day, a healthier you can be achieved with a few simple lifestyle tweaks.

Below you’ll find seven basic life hacks that, when cultivated or done consistently, can make a huge difference in your health.

1. Wake up early

This is not just about waking up early, mind you, but getting enough sleep, waking up early and going for a brisk 15-minute walk.

Physical activity doesn’t always require something demanding or sweat-inducing. Even something as simple as a brisk 15-minute walk every day can improve your health. In a report published by The Lancet, short bursts of physical exertion have been shown to significantly improve health. This can increase your lifespan by up to three years!

If you’re not a morning person, feel free to do it later in the day. Just make sure you get out there and stretch those legs.

2. Make your bed

In his commencement speech to the 2014 graduating class at the University of Texas, Admiral William H. McRaven emphasized the importance of making your bed every single day. According to Admiral McRaven, if you make your bed each morning, “you will have accomplished the first task of the day.” Doing this simple task paves the way for a positive snowball effect on your life.

It provides a sense of pride and encourages you to accomplish another task, and another, and so forth. This sense of accomplishment, this one task completed will, in time, turn into one habit that can lead to other good habits.

And as Admiral McRaven concludes, even if you’ve had a miserable day when everything went wrong, you still get to come home to a bed that’s been made — a sign of encouragement that tomorrow will be better.

3. Soak up the sun

Whether it’s drinking your morning cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, or having your lunch break, spend those moments sitting beside a window or outside during a pleasantly sunny day. Doing so for 15-minute intervals can boost both your mood and your immune system. It can also do wonders for your mental health.

Just remember that too much exposure to the sun, particularly during the summer months, can increase your risk of skin cancer.

4. Smile more

The act of smiling is like throwing your brain a little feel-good party. Every time you smile, neuropeptides are released. These small protein-like molecules work towards helping your body fight off stress. Dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin are all examples of neuropeptides which have been shown to relax your body and lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

So, smile more. Your life deserves a feel-good party now and again.

5. Take multivitamins daily

While a healthy diet remains crucial in maintaining your overall health and well-being, it’s not always easy making the healthiest food choices. And in those moments of self-indulgence, a multivitamin can serve as a health insurance policy. These dietary supplements, such as Nature’s Bounty vitamins, can fill in those small nutrient gaps you may miss in your diet.

It’s important to remember that multivitamins are not a cure-all. Nothing will replace a well-balanced diet. As always, consult your doctor before taking nutritional supplements.

6. Stretch

As our lifestyle becomes increasingly sedentary, it’s important to take a few moments throughout the day to stretch. Incorporating stretching into your daily routine improves flexibility and range of motion. It also assists in injury prevention, relaxes the muscles, and increases blood flow.

Take out five minutes each day to stretch. Loosen those limbs and breathe deeply, your body and mind will thank you for it.

7. Log off

The proliferation of smartphones and digital technology has meant we are more distracted than ever. But being online all the time is not always good for you. It can curb your creativity, and adversely affect your relationships and health.

So, participate in a daily “digital detox.” Every day before bedtime, turn off all digital devices. Doing so an hour before bedtime makes for a more peaceful night’s rest. Take this time to work on your body care routine, reclaim a long-ignored hobby or read that book you’ve been meaning to finish.

These simple tweaks, when done daily, will provide health benefits that are more manageable and sustainable. Small positive changes can add up to make big ones. So don’t hesitate, start small and, in time, you’ll grow into being your best healthy self.
