“I Want to Build a Home Gym… In My Garage… Right Now”

"I Want to Build a Home Gym... In My Garage... Right Now"

In today’s post, I’ll discuss the vitally important organizations that are dueling piano bars, my love for fitness and working out, throw in some quality GIFs, but mainly this post is a well-calculated and analytical ploy to a readership of 1. I’ll be passively-aggressively forwarding this link to my wife as my opening and closing argument for why we should need to build a home gym in our garage.   You with me?   Or, like the masses, do you think I’m a 6 out of 10 on the ‘crazy spectrum’ as well?   Let us know in the comments!     The Desire to Build a Home Gym Doesn’t Crop up out of Nowhere – Here’s my Origin Story…   Have you ever been to a dueling piano bar?   I’ve been to 2 and each time I’ve come away with sore cheeks (smiling) and no voice (singing […]

How Not to Have a Stress-Induced Heart Attack Before Age 35

How NOT To Have A Stress-Induced Heart Attack #Stress #anxiety #calm #meditate #peace

Sweaty palms, elevated heart rate, and the constant stream of incomplete yet highly punctuated thoughts… All the while, I was lying in bed thinking, “It’s 0200… GO TO SLEEP!” Which provided exactly 0% help for the situation.   Here we were with another one in a string of sleepless nights where it’s not an uncooperative child or a specific argument that’s got me all ‘riled up’ and thus not sleeping. Nope… What’s happening is an accumulation of 1,000 tiny stressors over the course of an extended period of time all compounding to produce what seems like immediate proximity to the breaking point. Whatever that means… I didn’t know how to characterize that point, just that it was near. And what seemed present on the other side didn’t sound so appealing.   (Photo courtesy of MKulp Photography)   I felt unhealthy and I needed to do something about it. But I […]

“I Need to Lose 25 Pounds of Baby Weight – Help!”

"I Need to Lose 25 Pounds of Baby Weight - Help!" #fitness #calories #weightloss #health

“I need to lose this baby weight but I have no idea how…” Her words both excited and terrified me at the same time. You see, my wife had asked me for fitness help in the past. And while things were great at the onset, I became more like “hardcore drill sergeant” and less like “caring and supportive husband”. Ultimately she started doing her own thing, we quit working out together, and my workouts haven’t been as spicy or fun since…   That was about 7 years ago and stasis has persisted from that moment forward.   Until today.   Today my wife was able to overcome the memory of me being an overly intense coach and the one who drove her away from P90X3 for good, all because she now faces an obstacle she’s never seen.   The woman was a track star, college volleyballer, and has […]

How to Not Gain a Single Pound Over the Holidays

How to Not Gain a Single Pound Over the Holidays #avoidweightgain #health #healthychoices #exercise #nutrition

Just because it’s “a thing” doesn’t mean we have to submit to the typical winter hibernation… When the weather turns colder, the days retreat shorter, and the average person tends to pack on 5-7 pounds during the winter months (John’s Hopkins). Well, here at MikedUp Blog, we’re doing everything we can to avoid holiday weight gain.   As my 3 year old says, “No. No…” (she also waves her finger while saying this). No extra pounds are welcome on this guy. And they shouldn’t be welcome on you either.   Let me issue you a challenge right here and now   I’m not gaining a single pound this holiday season. In fact, I vow to lose those 5-7 pounds. Are you game for doing the same?   If so, here is our game plan to avoid holiday weight gain   1- We’re going to make healthy holiday choices   Last […]

Shout-out: Why we’re risking a healthcare disaster in early retirement

Hello all!   Our Saturday morning shout-outs highlight a post/article/book/other that I’ve come across lately that deserves exactly that: a ‘shout-out.’ The goal here is to hopefully introduce my readers to other authors or bloggers that have had an impact on me, my writing, and my life.   This week’s shout-out is: Why we’re risking a healthcare disaster in early retirement by Steve at ThinkSaveRetire    In this post, Steve (a 35-year-old retiree and PF blogger) covers a unique health care plan that multiple people have brought up to me recently – Liberty Healthshare. This plan is unlike your traditional healthcare coverage. There is cost sharing, more selective admission to the plan, and claim denials if you were hurt while engaging in ‘dangerous behavior.’   Yet, Liberty Healthshare has many members that ‘share’ the cost of claims among the group. Premiums are low but the risk is seemingly high. Let Steve outline for […]

19 Breakthrough ways proven to increase testosterone naturally (guest blogger – Paul)

Hi, Team! I am thrilled to bring you the below article and infographic from Paul over at DNA lean! Last time, Paul covered different methods to help boost your weight-loss, but today he’s tackling the all-important testosterone levels. If you’re missing a little of the old spark, or if you’re just gathering some info for future days… Paul has you covered. I enjoyed having him back on the site and I hope you will too! Thanks for reading! -Mike   How to increase testosterone Testosterone is the hormone that literally separates the men from the boys, in fact during puberty, it is the increase in the hormone testosterone that is largely responsible for the transition of a boy into a man. Science has demonstrated that a high testosterone level can boost athletic performance, increase muscle mass/muscle tone, heighten libido and confidence amongst other desirable benefits. It is therefore of no coincidence […]

Three steps to trim your annual health numbers (guest blogger – Mel)

Yes, it’s that time again!  Around this time each year, many of us are presented with our health care plan “options” in the work place.  But, before you can decide what “option” is best for you, it is important that you know your “health” numbers.  It’s not only in the best interest of the employer (healthy employees keep employer health care premiums down) but also in YOUR best interests as YOU move toward a healthier YOU! Better yet, some employers are offering incentives.  That’s right, if you get a series of screening tests, some employers offer a monetary deduction (or incentive) for just getting the tests done.  Why are health screenings so important to YOU? Because screening tests look for diseases before you have symptoms. Understanding your “health” numbers is the best prevention!   But, you say, “All of this can be so confusing”.  “What are my numbers”?   “What […]

Getting Started with Exercise? Never Miss a Monday

Do you know what percentage of your week is equal to 3 half hour workouts? 0.9%.   Let’s go bold and say we’re going to tackle four hour-long workouts. Throw in 15 minutes a piece for drive time. That’s 5 solid hours devoted to exercise and your overall health. Ok, 5 hours is a huge chunk of time, right? We couldn’t take that away from the kids, work, cocktail hour, Facebook, election coverage, or The Bachelor. That’d be ridiculous. What if I told you that is only 3% of your week? Could you sacrifice 3% – for you? Let’s come back to this.   I equate achieving some level of fitness to pushing a boulder up and over a hill. Standing at the bottom looking up seems daunting, insurmountable, and like a waste of time, I get it – but it’s possible. Also, once you reach the top it’s much […]
